The teachers

Jim Barrett

A lifelong martial artist, Coach Jim began Shotokan Karate at four years old, receiving a 1st degree black belt at sixteen.  He then began training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu while a sophomore at Knox College.  He received his Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Black Belt in 2017.

Jim is an experienced teacher. He began his teaching career in 2013 and since then has spear headed programs for both adults and children in various gyms in the Chicago suburbs.

When not on the mat, Jim can be found tinkering with intellectual/physical toys like the indo board and diabolo or making art and music.

Ramses Bugarin

Ramses started in martial arts as a student in Hapkido, a catchall Korean martial art. There was a grappling element to it which is what he fell in love with.  After college where he studied classical clarinet, he fell into training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in a friend’s basement where it quickly became his life’s focus. Having been training and competing since 2012 like it was his job, there is no other place Ramses would rather be than on the mat improving his own technique and spreading the art the has enriched his life so.

When not on the mat, Ramses can be found playing with dogs, studying Jiu Jitsu instructionals and matches, or working out.
